OLED Market: Light at the End of the Tunnel
The OLED industry has promised revolutionary screen and lighting applications, but the road to viable and affordable mass market applications has been long. 2012 is turning into a breakthrough year for the industry however as real capacity investments are in place and more sophisticated mass production methods coming on stream. With a more concentrated value chain – more resistant to copycats – a battered screen industry stands to regain better control of this generation technology and a chance to rebuild its deteriorated profit margins. And while the lighting market is still in its infancy and with continued cut throat price competition from existing technologies, OLEDs have strong long term potential in a number of areas including specialty lighting, architectural lighting, back lighting, signage and general illumination.
